Above A Highland Village, A Scottish Highland Soundscape

about

In the spring of 2017 Mark Brennan returned to the hills and mountains on the West Coast of Scotland where he grew up in the 1970's and 80's. He had come back with his daughter to give her the experience of the natural places he had come to love as a child. These recordings were made high above the small village of Arrochar, at the head of Loch Long, on the West Coast of Scotland. It was in these hills as a young adventurous boy that Mark forged a bond with nature that was to travel with him through his work as an artist, to Canada.

Staying at his brother and sister in laws house he arose each morning at 3.30am to head to the hills above Succoth to record the morning chorus. As the days passed he traveled slightly further each time, through an old forested plantation near where a viking settlement was recently unearthed, higher still to the forestry tracks and eventually to the point where the woodland recedes to the mountain tops.

Mark carried with him a small handheld recorder and two tiny microphones, just enough equipment to travel overseas with, equipment that would also provide a high quality recording. While working he discovered a small window of natural silence before the villagers awoke and traveled to work each morning, it was during this silence that most of these recordings were made.

"These soundscapes mean a great deal to me, listening to them I pull age old memory from my childhood spent in the woods and glens of the West Coast of Scotland. It is as if after 30 years away, they were still there, I still knew these sounds, and still find joy in them."

This recording is best listened to on a low volume setting or with headphones or ear buds, as recorded and heard naturally by Mark at the time.
