Wild Atlantic Coast

about

Wild Atlantic Coast was recorded in June of 2018. Mark had spent a week on the road in Southern Nova Scotia, making his way around the small harbors and inlets recording the natural sounds and photographing the landscape. A significant portion of that week was spent in Thomas Radall Provincial Park, not far from Port Joli. The park and surrounding coastline including Kejimkujik National Park Seaside, make up a significant amount of coastal wilderness, an intact coastline that represents an array of diverse ecosystems in this region.

The recording starts at about 4am, by this time Mark has surfaced from his tent, having already found the spot where he will place his microphones the day before. The morning chorus has now begun, gently at first, with the Thrushes, in the distance, almost a kilometer away the ocean surf can be heard. Between the microphones and ocean is the boreal forest, full of mostly migrant birds, waiting for dawn. Sparrows and Warblers join the chorus as the light comes and the temperature warms, until we hear the full diversity of a wild boreal coastline.

It is a soothing and unique recording, one that will lull you to sleep and fill your thoughts with fascination as the natural world unfolds while you listen, every bird sound has meaning and is as ancient as those waves you can also hear. If you are a birder you will hear many tropical migrants in their natural breeding habitat. Birds heard include, Swainsons Thrush, Common Yellowthroat, White Throated Sparrow, Palm Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Golden Crowned Kinglet, American Crow, Black and White Warbler and if you listen carefully a Common Loon.

The recording has been kept completely natural with very little editing, Mark has also included a bonus selection of his black and white photographic work from the area, all taken with medium format film at the time.
