Ancient Spring

from Water by Mark Brennan

/

about

Sometimes sounds can be so subtle you have to move slowly and listen with pure intent to discover them. This is actually the sound of a spring, running underground towards a small lake in the Boreal Forest of Canada. The moss covered rocks in this area are close to the surface, creating gaps and allowing water to flow through them underground. There was a natural hole at the base of a Black Spruce where I could just get two microphones in, clipped onto a stick. Getting the microphones in here opened up a whole new world of sound.

I actually fell asleep recording this and was woke up near the 10 minute mark when a Spruce Grouse fluttered to his perch not far away, if you listen carefully you can hear him twice in this recording. You can also hear the high wind gently rocking back and forth a few of the trees and the ‘surface’ sounds of forest birds in the distance. The track lets you go deeper into whats there to be discovered by staying in the moment and is a wonderful piece for meditation.
